Meet Our City Manager

Have you met Dan?

Dan Stoltman, city manager of Norway Michigan

Dan Stoltman is the city manager for Norway, filling the shoes of Ray Anderson in 2022. Growing up downstate, he was raised in the family construction business in Midland, Michigan. At the age of 24, he attended Oakland University, where he received his political science degree. He went on to receive his Master's in Public Administration from Eastern Michigan University, with a focus on public land planning and development management. After his experience as a buyer’s assistant for Oakland County Purchasing, he became the assistant city administrator for Washburn, Wisconsin., where he helped with housing and economic development.

After Washburn, Stoltman decided to make a move out west to be with his now fiancé. Known as a sportsman’s paradise, Kremmling, Colorado, welcomed him as the town manager. Mirroring some of our favorite outdoor activities here in Norway, Kremmling offers extensive trails, rapids, and wildlife.

Stoltman and his fiancé saw moving to Michigan as an opportunity to enjoy living and outdoor experiences that are similar to Colorado while at the same time benefiting from a lower cost of living and closer proximity to family. Settling in the Upper Peninsula would be a part of their long-term vision.

Stoltman sees the potential the UP has to offer: “If the world keeps going the way it’s going, with remote work continuing to become more of a norm, people coming up here to recreate and may end up choosing to stay.”

“With the rising cost of living, it can be an attractive offer to those who work in the city. Whether it's downstate or the Chicago area where the cost of living is high, and this is the place everyone goes to recreate… you can have your career down there and your activities up here and stay here. Hopefully, that continues to be a viable option.”

Stoltman plans to apply that to his goals and vision for Norway, “We need more growth, not just to continue building our community, but also in how we operate and provide services to the community.” His hopes are to provide more amenities for the community, help to bring businesses in, and eliminate some of the barriers to make those goals more attainable.

He looks forward to hearing from the community about what type of growth they want and finding ways to further develop and improve Downtown Norway.
